Sierra Meadows Foundation is a passion project from the CEO of Sierra Meadows Behavioral Health and Ascend Behavioral Health, Dr. Matthew Tatum. Sierra Meadows Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was created to reach the broader population of the Central Valley, allowing greater access to mental healthcare for uninsured and underinsured individuals.
Our belief is that individuals struggling with mental health conditions have enough barriers when they are in crisis - we don’t want finances to be another. We believe that everyone deserves health and wellbeing and our mission is to remove barriers to accessing mental healthcare in Fresno, CA.
The Birdie Lou Counseling Center is named after Birdie Lou Tatum, Dr. Tatum's paternal grandmother. "Grandma Lou", as she is lovingly known to her family, continues to inspire many by living a life of love, integrity, and purpose, all while being the funniest woman in the room.
The first project from Sierra Meadows Foundation is The Birdie Lou Counseling Center. The Birdie Lou Counseling Center provides free therapy services to those in Fresno County experiencing mild to moderate mental health symptoms. We offer individual therapy for adults and children (8 and older), couples therapy, family therapy, and a variety of groups to address a wide range of mental healthcare concerns.
The Birdie Lou Counseling Center will also function as a training facility for therapists-in-training with local marriage and family therapy or counseling Master’s programs. All therapists-in-training will be supervised by an experienced, licensed, Marriage & Family Therapist. This model allows for our clientele to receive thorough care at no cost.
Dana Charles, LMFT received her BA in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and her MS in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from Fresno State. Dana began her career working with clients in the substance abuse and recovery community and spent the previous three years working for family court providing mediation and custody recommendations in family law cases. Dana has worked in a variety of settings and with many diverse client populations and is passionate about helping and supporting people in need through empathy and compassion. Dana is passionate about giving back to the therapist community in the Central Valley by serving as a clinical supervisor, helping new and training therapists in their journey to becoming licensed therapists. Dana strongly believes that in any walk of life—whether as a client, or a therapist—self-care, hobbies, and positive relationships with others are the most important priority in creating a fulfilling life. When not working with therapists or clients, Dana enjoys reading, yoga, spending time with family, baking, and spending time with her dogs.
